MASTER COPY "My Grey Mare" - After Sir Alfred Munnings by Linda Briesacher

This painting is part of my "After the Masters" series painted for the American Academy of Art Spring Online show (https://www.aaea.info/viewcollection/159426).  This is my version of a painting done by Sir Alfred Munnings in 1914.  He titled the painting "My Gray Mare".  I learned so much about his use of light and color by doing this painting.  I guess if I had to boil it down to the single thing though that really struck me with this is that I would get it to where I thought it was right, but then realize that there was still more light to be brought in.  I just kept "pushing it" far past the point that I might have done on my own.  Also, I tend to think about the horses I paint in real terms.  And she is a beauty for sure.  Given the time period, 1914, I named her Pip (her real name was Duchess).  Back in this day if someone was excellent or extremely attractive she might have been known as quite a pip.  That's what I would have called her had she been mine.  I truly enjoyed painting this.
